Two ways to crop
- Trim the white margins. Each page is cut down to what is actually on it, with a little room left around it. Pages with different amounts of margin are each trimmed to their own content.
- Cut a fixed margin. The same number of millimetres comes off every edge of every page, for an exact, even result.
Nothing is thrown away
A PDF crop works by showing less of each page, not by deleting what is outside it. That is why undo brings the edges back, and why cropping barely changes the file size. Do not crop to hide something private: the cropped-off area is still in the file. Use redaction for that.
Good for
- Reading papers and books on a phone or e-reader, where wide margins waste the screen.
- Scans with a dark border or the edge of the scanner lid showing.
- Slides or figures exported onto a page much bigger than they are.
Tips
- Trim first, then check. A page number or a faint footer near the edge counts as content and keeps the margin wider.
- Scans with a grey background may trim less than you expect, because the background counts as something on the page. Cut a fixed margin instead.
- Need a smaller file? Compress the PDF as well.
Questions
- Is anything deleted?
- No. A PDF crop hides the edges rather than deleting them, which is why undo can bring them back.
- Does trimming leave any margin?
- Yes, a little room is left around what is on each page, so nothing touches the edge.
- Can I crop just one page?
- Not yet. Every page is cropped the same way.
- Will it make the file smaller?
- Not much, because nothing is removed. To reduce the size, compress the PDF.
