How to add page numbers to a PDF

Numbers where you want them
Choose one of six places (top or bottom, left, centre or right) and one of four styles: 1, Page 1, 1 of 12 or Page 1 of 12. The numbers are set in a plain sans-serif at a size that suits body text, a little in from the edge of the page so they survive printing.
On a page that is turned sideways, "the bottom" is the bottom as you see it, so numbers always read the right way up.
Skipping a cover page
Most reports and theses leave the cover, and often the contents page, unnumbered. Set Start on page to the first page that should carry a number and First number to what it should say. For example, start on page 3 with number 1 to skip a cover and a contents page.
Good for
- Reports, theses and manuals, before printing or submitting.
- Legal bundles and exhibits that have to be referred to by page.
- Merged documents, where each part had its own numbering. Merge the PDFs first, then number the whole.
Tips
- Numbering one part of a longer document? Set the first number to where this part begins, such as 41.
- Pages already have numbers? Check whether the old ones are still wanted. You can white out old numbers before adding new ones.
- Changed your mind? Undo takes the numbers off again while the document is open.
Questions
- Can I leave the cover page unnumbered?
- Yes. Start on page 2, with the number 1, and the cover is left as it is.
- Can the numbers start at something other than 1?
- Yes. Choose any first number, which is useful when the PDF is one part of a longer document.
- Can I take them off again?
- Yes. Undo removes them, as long as you have not downloaded and closed the document.
- Is there a watermark?
- No. What you download is your document with its page numbers and nothing else.
